Indeed, I'm planning to make those appear as events similar to the join/leave notifications... a different style applied to the text, of course.
I've created a bot known as Theorem that logs chat from the channels #welcome, #tribes, and #php to an SQL database that can be viewed at the following URL:
http://mcafeeweb.webhop.net/~hayden/ArloriaLogs/
You can either browse through log history, or view the latest in chat (automatically refreshed).
